This means that critical customer data is less likely to be leaked and, even if it is, the fallout can be dealt with swiftly and efficiently to minimise reputational damage.
The story is different for an SME. A hacking attack on a start-up can prove fatal if they’re unprepared; not just in terms of their IT framework, but also in terms of their reputation. SMEs have enough of a challenge winning new customers when they’re starting out – add a hacking scandal into the mix and it will soon begin to feel like you’re wading through treacle.
When you consider the seismic impact cyber attacks can have on organisations as big as Dropbox or Mumsnet, the implications for your smaller business become more real. Strong IT safety protocols are step one, but step two needs to be a watertight PR strategy to deal with a disaster if it happens.
As an SME, every penny counts, and one of the struggles is assessing where to spend money, and where to save it. However, your reputation is everything when you’re setting out. Invest in it now, or risk paying through the nose later.
